Gas Furnace Maintenance Tips: Keep it clean and efficient

greenleaf2461

Gas furnaces have a lot of essential tasks that need to be done to keep them clean and efficient. One of these tasks is keeping the ashes and dust out of the furnace. In addition, it can help prevent you from having to clean the furnace whenever there is a problem. There are a few ways to do this, but here are seven tips to help you get started:

7 easy ways to keep your gas furnace running smoothly

Tip #1 - Have enough oil

It may seem obvious; however, if you have a leaking boiler or furnace (which is not uncommon), you will need to top off the system with heating oil. You should get at least 1 gallon per month added. If you live where winters are cold, you might want to add 2 gallons per month. Keep in mind that using heated oils will raise fuel bills by about 10-15%. But then again. If you don't want to burn $100-$150/month in heating oil, then maybe you shouldn't be burning any gas in the first place! ;)

Tip #2 - Make sure it's clean

A dirty furnace means accumulated ash and lint in the combustion chamber and air filter. Making sure they're well cleaned out annually will save money on repairs down the road. Also, make sure the thermostat is set correctly - check to see if the pilot flame is lit and that it stays lit throughout the operation. A properly working thermostat keeps the temperature at the desired level.

Tip #3 - Check valves

Check valves to let the pressure build up inside the unit while stopping the flow of hot gases back into the furnace. It helps prevent problems with overheating. When you hear the unit rattle or bang, it's probably time to replace the check valve.

Tip #4 - Clean filters regularly

Your home is full of tiny particles that travel up the flue and end up inside your furnace. When these particles accumulate, they reduce airflow and cause inefficient combustion. Filtering them out prevents this problem. Don't wait until your furnace fails before cleaning the filters.

Tip #5 - Seal ductwork appropriately

If your ductwork isn't sealed properly, you'll allow outside elements into your home, increasing your cooling costs. As much as possible, seal ductwork completely, including vents.

Tip #6 - Use proper venting

It would help if you always used adequate ventilation to avoid a buildup of carbon monoxide fumes. Ventilation also reduces the fire risk due to excess moisture accumulating in the room. Be sure to keep exhaust fans operating continuously, especially overnight.

Tip #7 - Replace worn parts

Furnaces wear parts over time. If you've waited until now to change the fan motor, blower wheel, burner nozzle, etc., you'll pay a lot more than you would if you had changed them earlier.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, gas furnace maintenance tips can include regular checks to ensure proper function and, especially during use times, maintaining the furnace at the optimal temperature.
